Summer Sounds presented by Power In One June 21, 2019 – Posted in: African Culture, African-American Culture, Culture, Doing Good, Fashion X Music, In the Community – Tags: , , , ,

If you’re looking for music, fashion, afro-centric empowerment, and over all good vibes this summer, don’t just go to Afropunk, check out all these PIO sponsored/associated events as well. Each of the managing partners of the brand, Ryan, Atuya, and Kerrick, cultivate in separate markets which offers the brand an opportunity to spread the empowering energy of PIO locally and not just through the internet. The PIO sponsored events I mentioned will take place in each of their local markets : Los Angeles, CA, Washington, DC, and Charlotte, NC, respectively. So if you find yourself in any of these cities in June and July, be sure to check them out.

These summer musical experiences will occur as follows so if you are interested in joining us here are the details you need to know:

  • On Saturday June 22, 2019, Ryan will also be hosting a music event at the Anacostia Art Center.

Ryan Lucas, managing partner of PIO and producer/hip-hop artist

  • On Saturday June 29, 2019, Power In One presents the WE DON’T NEED THEIR APPROVAL Music Fest at The Wise Spot in Los Angeles, Ca (2623 W Slauson Ave).  We will be introducing to some & reintroducing to others a collection of soul filled artists who do not need anyone’s permission to express themselves. These are hand selected talents who have something to say. Come be a part of this movement.  During this show we will be collecting diapers for the community that the The Wise Spot supports. Why diapers? 1 in 3 U.S Families struggle to provide clean diapers for their babies. The cost of diapers is expensive for families and as members of the LA community we would like to help our families meet their basic needs which includes clean diapers. Men are asked to bring a pack of size 5 diapers.  Women are asked to bring a pack of size 3 diapers. The Wise Spot is a family community center working to end the struggle felt by the Black family in the community. They do this by creating programs to serve the basic needs while teaching how to provide for themselves. They work to build institutions to educate, employ, and empower. They are taking back control over the neighborhoods and making their streets a better place to grow and thrive in. • On July 19-21st, PIO will be co-hosting the ELW weekend in Charlotte which will thrive alongside the second annual PIO cultivated Afro Cool Fest.  Stay connected to the 2019 Empowering Lifestyles Weekend Scheduled at www.elwqc.com

All of these events coincide with the PIO mission to “empower lifestyles by igniting the fire that you as an individual have the power to affect change within yourself, community and the world.” With this in mind the brand will be rolling out its own sock initiative named Step Up, Power Up. Socks are rarely donated, making them one of the most needed items in homeless shelters.  Socks are important. Wearing clean, dry socks protects from a number of health issues. The goal is to maintain a sock drive during the events and beyond that will be initially dispersed to the homeless in our local markets. The homelessness issue in DC and LA is something serious let alone in the country. And although the brand can’t afford to house all these people, the least we can do is ignite the fire within ourselves and others to assist with clean socks. Sometimes big gestures come in the form of small things, or sometimes simple things one does not think twice about in their daily routines. Unless of course those second nature luxuries are no longer available at your fingertips. The drive will begin June 22, 2019 at the Anacostia Arts Center vent. Be on the lookout for custom PIO socks that you can not only donate to the cause but also add to your closet. More details on the drive and the PIO socks will be available in the future.

In the spirit of cultivating empowering experiences and realities, we look forward to seeing you at our local events this summer in (LA, DC, and Charlotte). Stay empowered!
